The enquiry as it arrived
The buyer had three quotes for what all three called a 450 cm rescue boat, spread across roughly thirty percent. The instinct was to negotiate the middle one down. The first useful step was to stop comparing prices and establish what each quote was actually for, because at 450 cm the published programme holds three different answers.
One is rated 7 adults and a child at 40 hp on 0.9/1.2 mm fabric. One is rated 8 persons at 40 hp on 1.2 mm throughout. The heavy-duty build at the same length and the same power is rated 10 persons, because its floor and fabric carry more. Three quotes, three constructions, one dimension in common.
Mission fit before hull structure
The deployment turned out to be hand-carried into flooded streets from a truck, not trailered. That single fact reordered everything: the aluminium-floor configurations the quotes assumed were the wrong answer, and the VIB air-deck layouts — 390 cm at 6 persons, 430 cm at 8 — were the ones to price, because a crew that cannot lift the boat off the vehicle has bought nothing.
Rated persons then had to be read against the real load. A four-person team carries pumps, throw bags and a backboard, and often a casualty on the way back. The working rule applied was one size above the headcount, which moved the requirement from the smallest hull that matched the crew count to the next one up.
Where the price difference actually was
Once fabric grade, floor type and rated-person assumption were stated for each quote, the thirty percent spread mostly disappeared. The cheapest was the lighter fabric on an aluminium floor; the most expensive included the pump, oars and repair kit per boat that the others had quoted separately. Neither was mispriced — they were answering different questions.
The remaining genuine difference was production timing, which had not been in any of the three replies. Asking for the required date as a hard input, and what happens to the slot if it moves, separated the supplier with a plan from the two quoting availability.
What was required before the deposit
Buoyancy, material and load documents naming the exact model and length — not the range, not a neighbouring size. Carton count, gross weight and packed dimensions per unit, because the fleet had to reach a regional depot and the freight was volumetric. And a production photograph of the ordered configuration before shipment.
None of that is unusual to ask for, and all of it is easier to obtain at quotation stage than after a deposit. A supplier able to produce the documents when quoting has them; one who offers them later is usually intending to obtain them.
