Domestic and export builds differ in fabric, not in shape

The same factory often runs a domestic line and an export line through the same moulds. The hull dimensions match, the photographs match, and the difference sits in the material specification — the dinghy programmes publish 0.7/0.9 mm on the lighter line and 0.9 mm and above on the heavier one, with 1.2 mm reserved for the rescue and heavy-duty builds. A domestic listing quoting a low price for a familiar length is usually quoting the lighter fabric, and it is not mislabelled; it is simply a different product.

Ask for the thickness on the tube and on the floor as separate figures, and ask whether a stated 1.2 mm applies to the whole hull or only the lower tube. That single question resolves most of the price gap between two listings that look identical.

Read the capacity line for its assumption

Rated persons is quoted against a sheet, and the sheets disagree. In the published tables a 245 cm hull appears both as "3 persons" and as "2 adults + 1 child", and a 450 cm hull appears as 7 adults and a child, as 8 persons, and as 10 persons on the heavy-duty build. None of those is an error — each is a different construction or a different assumption about who is aboard.

So do not compare two listings on the capacity number. Compare them on length, beam, fabric thickness and floor type, and treat the person count as a consequence of those rather than as a specification in its own right.

What a marketplace listing cannot tell you

Four things decide whether a boat is fit for the use you have in mind, and a listing rarely states any of them: how the seams are joined, what the transom is made of and how it is bonded, whether the floor ships inside the boat, and what is actually in the carton. The last of those is where two prices most often diverge — oars, pump, repair kit, seat board and carry bag are sometimes included and sometimes each a line.

Ask for the complete carton contents and the packed dimensions in the same message as the price. The packed figure also tells you the freight cost, which on an inflatable is a larger share of landed cost than buyers expect.

Verification steps that actually change the outcome

Get the model code, get the fabric specification, get production-stage photographs of your model rather than catalogue renders, and get the packing shot before shipment. Those four artefacts turn a listing into something you can hold a supplier to.

Where a safety claim is involved, require the supporting document to name the exact model and length you are buying. Buoyancy, material and load claims are model-specific, and a document for a neighbouring size in the same range is not evidence for yours.
