Unit price was the last thing worth comparing

The wholesale enquiry covered three listings at similar prices for two-person inflatable kayaks. What differed was everything the listings did not say: the material grade, the floor construction, whether a pump and paddles were in the carton, and the packed dimensions that would decide the freight on a container order.

On a wholesale run those four fields move landed cost far more than the unit price does. A kayak that ships two per carton rather than one changes the container maths completely, and no listing states it.

Material grade is the hidden variable

The closest published construction reference in the compact inflatable range runs 0.7/0.9 mm PVC on the lighter line and 0.9 mm and above on the heavier one. A kayak quoted without a thickness is quoted without the specification that decides how it survives being dragged over gravel by a rental customer.

For a rental or resale fleet, ask for the thickness on the tube and on the floor separately, and ask what the repair path is — whether patch material in the matching colour ships with the order. A fleet that cannot be repaired locally is a fleet that shrinks every season.

What the carton has to contain

Paddles, a pump, a seat, a repair kit, a carry bag and a fin are each sometimes included and sometimes a line item. For a wholesale order the question is not only whether they are included but whether they are packed with each unit or shipped loose, because that decides both the freight cube and what your own picking process has to do on arrival.

Ask for the packed dimensions, the gross weight and the units per carton in the same message as the price. Those three figures turn a unit price into a landed one, and they are the fields a wholesale quote most often omits.

Settling the commercial frame

Confirm minimum order quantity per colourway rather than per order, sample timing, and whether the sample price is credited against the production run. For a first wholesale order, ask for the 20-piece and 100-piece assumptions alongside the sample so the price curve is visible before committing.

Then confirm who the counterparty is and check the invoice beneficiary against it. On wholesale volumes that check costs a minute and is the highest-value step in the sequence.
